Mandy of April + August Photography specializes in the exciting genre of lifestyle family photography. She uses an approach she describes as “candid, vibrant, and emotive”. Candid in how she captures expressions and engagement. Vibrant in the color saturation and exposure of the scene. And emotive in how each image makes you feel. Rather than simply creating a beautiful image, Mandy is always trying to express something about the bonds her subjects share with each other. Planning for family photos can be an intimidating process. What style represents our family; who do we trust to document us? Where can we have the photos taken? What should we wear? I understand all of those dilemmas when it comes to family photography. You are not a cookie-cutter family ; I want to create images that are unique for you... not follow an online portfolio. If my style is what you are looking for, you can trust that I will treat your family as my own. I want to create the images that you will want to hang on your walls. I want to freeze time for you, as you are. We can have pretty outfits from a Pinterest dream, or we can go in day-to-day clothing too! Locations in the Des Moines and Waukee area offer lots of variety from a natural space to urban setting.
Activity-based and in-home sessions are also fun and creative ways to explore family photography!
Family Photos Can be Fun!
My goal is to capture your family for a portrait (everyone looking and smiling) as soon as we get together; get the "work" done. I understand that the point of the session is to fully document all of the faces as well as the interactions too. Then we use the rest of the session to enjoy each other and capture as many real emotions and smiles as possible. Lots of movement, laughing and letting loose. If we are in-home, we can go from room to room, and keep the session moving. Never sitting too long in one place. I tend to joke that if I could be any type of photographer, I'd ideally be a sports photographer to capture movement... But I don't love sports and love to hang out with kids... so movement in family photos is key!

This is not the time to be self-conscious; take this time to enjoy each other! Happiness always looks best in photos. I try to keep the session light-hearted and I want the kids (and husbands-let's be honest) to be unaware that an actual photo session is happening.
